About the designer:
My name is Tyra, and I am the owner and maker behind Back 40 Designs. My business is inspired by my love of the outdoors and getting out and exploring nature with my family, especially my young son. We live on an acreage in the beautiful Comox Valley, on Vancouver Island, BC. Our farm is home to horses, cows, chickens, dogs, cats and a revolving mix of wildlife – all making our “Back 40” my favorite place to be.
About the Product:
Designed exclusively for West Coast Mamas, made with Extra fine Merino wool from Manos del Uruguay
Manos del Uruguay is a socially-conscious, not for profit organization organized in 12 cooperatives. Each cooperative is a workshop located in a small village of Uruguay’s countryside. The artisans are the owners of the company and Manos profits are shared among the cooperatives or re-invested in the organization. The cooperatives have strong bonds with the communities where they are inserted - having a positive impact in society and families is very important for them.
All of Manos del Uruguays yarns are hand dyed. The artisans use big pots heated by wood kettles, dyeing in small batches creating wonderful colors. The result is yarns with colors that are bright and wild, full of nuances and variations. No two skeins are the same, each one is unique, a testimony of a particular moment. Keeping the traditional hand spinning skills alive is very important for Manos del Uruguay and it allows them to create unique, beautiful yarns.
Every garment or yarn they produce has a tag with the artisan signature and the name of the village where the cooperative is located. This help remind that behind each poncho, throw or scarf, there is a woman, a story.
